'Keyhole' procedure, fast recovery
Given their role in her fertility and overall health, a woman’s reproductive organs require ongoing monitoring and, sometimes, surgical interventions, to diagnose and eliminate conditions causing them harm, while preserving or restoring optimal function.
The benefits laparoscopy offers to gynaecological health are many. Procedures such as hysterectomies (removal of the uterus) and myomectomies (removal of fibroids) can be successfully performed laparoscopically, with far less pain than open abdominal surgery, which requires larger incisions and longer hospital stays and recovery times. By contrast, recovery from laparoscopic surgery is generally faster, with reduced scarring and a lower risk of infection.
At times where a physical abnormality or other health issue could be affecting your reproductive system, which cannot be confirmed by an X-ray or an ultrasound, then minimally-invasive laparoscopy can be a powerful tool for the purposes of diagnosis and treatment.
The laparoscopic procedure
Assisted by my experienced team, I perform this ‘keyhole’ surgery in-house at the Aretaeio Hospital, under general anaesthetic, by inserting a laparoscope – a thin viewing tube - through a tiny incision in your abdomen.
The laparoscope allows me to examine your uterus, ovaries, Fallopian tubes and nearby organs in order to:
- Diagnose and treat endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, pelvic inflammatory disease and causes of female infertility
- Remove fibroids, uterus, ovarian cysts, lymph nodes or to handle an ectopic pregnancy (when a fertilised egg attaches itself in a place other than inside the uterus)
- Treat a range of disorders, including urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and certain forms of cancer
- Evaluate certain cancers, including those of the ovary, uterus and cervix
